The Educational Foundation of Osaka Medical and Pharmaceutical University

The Educational Foundation of Osaka Medical and Pharmaceutical University was established on April 1, 2016 through the merger of the Educational Foundation of Osaka Medical College and the Educational Foundation of Osaka University of Pharmaceutical Sciences as a comprehensive institution for medical education at the secondary and tertiary levels. It is composed of Osaka Medical College, Osaka University of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Takatsuki Junior and Senior High Schools.
Article 3 of the Foundation’s Articles of Incorporation states, “In accordance with the Basic Act on Education, School Education Act and Private Schools Act, our foundation shall establish educational facilities and provide education, research and high-quality medical care from an international perspective to train people with creativity and empathy who are able to contribute to human welfare and the progress of culture.” Accordingly, our mission is to train high-quality medical personnel who combine an international perspective with a rich humanitarian sensibility, and the next generation of leaders and global talent.

Established in 1927 as Japan’s first five-year higher school of medicine, Osaka Medical College celebrated its 90th anniversary last year having produced more than 9,000 skilled physicians. The College’s nursing education program has a similar history, and has trained more than 4,500 nurses.

The traditions and history of Osaka University of Pharmaceutical Sciences, meanwhile, date back 114 years to its establishment in 1904. During that time, it has provided the nation with more than 20,000 graduates who have gone on to play a central role in pharmaceutical education and at pharmaceutical companies and elsewhere, working in a wide range of areas, such as hospitals, pharmacies, pharmaceutical manufacturers, government agencies, and educational institutions.

Takatsuki Junior and Senior High Schools are secondary education providers that have educated more than 14,000 talented pupils since their establishment in 1940. Having become coeducational in 2017, they are training the next generation of leaders and global talent while continuing to strengthen a distinctive curriculum based on the Super Science High School (SSH) and Super Global High School (SGH) designations awarded by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

Takatsuki Junior and Senior High Schools will celebrate their 80th anniversary since their founding in 2020, Osaka Medical College will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2027, and Osaka University of Pharmaceutical Sciences will celebrate its 125th anniversary in 2029. The Foundation, which operates college and secondary education institutions with long and storied histories, is currently engaging in multiple simultaneous projects, including the second phase of construction in a total refurbishment of the Takatsuki Junior and Senior High School campuses, which completed work on library and lecture hall buildings in the summer of 2018. After its completion in March 2018, the Kansai BNCT Medical Center next-generation cancer treatment facility began operating in June of the same year. Not only has this facility began conducting PET-CT examinations and manufacturing drugs using a cyclotron, it is engaging in basic and clinical research as well as clinical trials with an eye on starting full-scale cancer treatment operations in two years. In addition, long-term plans are on pace including preparations for major construction on the new main hospital building, transferal of the Osaka Mishima Emergency Critical Care Center, integration of the two colleges, and additions to the Osaka University of Pharmaceutical Sciences research building

Through substantial contributions to society and the local community, the Foundation is working to fulfil its role as a public institution while maintaining its essential aspects of continuity, communality, and a unique identity. The Foundation is focusing on fostering human resources that can serve as a base of the institutional operations necessary to put these goals into practice while strengthening the core of the Foundation itself.

Recognizing the changes in the population structure and the nature of society in Japan, the Foundation aims to train top-quality medical personnel to a high level, and to establish and provide advanced infrastructure for healthcare that integrates and harmonizes the medical, pharmaceutical, and nursing sciences. In doing so, it is seeking to create attractive schools that are able to undertake distinctive interdisciplinary education and research as well as team-based medical education, and that will provide the next generation of students with an education that will allow them to go on to study at their choice of a variety of universities. Moreover, the Foundation intends to work collectively with the aim of becoming the best, most distinctive and comprehensive institution for medical education in Japan at the secondary and tertiary levels, with sound governance, while making an ongoing contribution to society (sustainability) as a “Center of Community” engaged primarily in education, research, and medical care.
